A monument to courage shines brighter in Mount Carroll
Bob Buman, a re-enactor portraying Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, makes a closing statement Saturday during the rededication of the Civil War monument in downtown Mount Carroll. The monument, on the northeast corner of the courthouse square at North Clay and East Market streets, was first dedicated in 1891, and received new lighting earlier this year. Mayor Carl Bates opened the ceremony, followed by a presentation on the monument's history from the city's sesquicentennial committee. Members of the Galena Generals, re-enactors from the Galena-Jo Daviess Historical Society, read names of Carroll County soldiers who died during the Civil War, joined by a drummerwho played between each general's presentation.
