Jose Hernandez of Sterling tries to hook some catfish Thursday along the upper dam on the Rock River as the late-day sun heads for the horizon. Junior fishers looking to plunk down a bobber will have plenty of chances to do it this weekend – there are three youth fishing events scheduled in Dixon, Morrison and Rock Falls.
• In Morrison – A Youth Fishing Derby runs from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Rockwood State Park, 18750 Lake Road. The free contest is for those 15 and younger. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded. A parent or guardian must sign for each child.
• In Rock Falls – There's a free children's fishing derby Saturday at Centennial Park on East 11th Street, and a portion of the Hennepin Canal. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with fishing from 9 to 11:30, for those 14 and younger. Prizes will be awarded and each participant will receive a gift. Free hot dogs and a drink will be served.
• In Dixon – The free Dixon Family Carp Derby runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. Kids will receive prizes and awards will be awarded to adults while supplies last.
