A new home is where the Heart is – Quilt and gift shop moves to Rock Falls

A longtime local quilt and gift shop has moved across the river.

Jan Sierens, 61, of Rock Falls, has owned Country at Heart Quilt and Gift Shop for 15 years. In addition to quilt and sewing supplies and classes, she offers some antiques, home decor, seasonal items, candles, linens, stationery and more.

About a month ago, the Sterling native moved from 1910 E. Fourth St. in Sterling, where she had been for
7 years, to 9843 Hoover Road in Rock Falls. Before that, she was in downtown Sterling for about 8 years.

“I had rented for 15 years and then bought this building. I had been looking for a building to buy,” Sierens said.

Her quilt shop houses 200 bolts of fabric, she’s a certified Pfaff sewing machine dealer, and “we offer classes for beginners all the way to advanced,” Sierens said.

Sewing is near and dear to her heart. “When I was 9 years old, my grandmother taught me how to sew, knit and crochet.”

Before opening Country at Heart, she was working for a company that downsized. “My husband, Dale, asked me what I would like to do since my children were all grown. I told him I would love to start my own business.”

Traffic at the new shop has exceeded her expectations, Sierens said. “We have had a lot of people come in from the outskirts and have had a lot of new customers as well as a lot of our old faithfuls.”

“I am very lucky to get to do what I love every day. This is my passion.”
