Rockford wants to hike video gambling fees

ROCKFORD (AP) – Rockford could have one of the stiffest video gambling fees in Illinois if voters approve a home rule proposal.

The city is proposing an annual fee of $1,000 per machine for those who operate video gambling terminals.

A referendum will be included on today’s primary ballot that asks city voters to approve home rule authority in Rockford to provide the city with broader powers to tax and govern itself.

Current state law allows non-home rule communities to charge a license fee of up to $25 per machine.
