PROPHETSTOWN – Marian E. Hiland, 97, of Prophetstown, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 22, 2018, at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born Aug. 11, 1920, at home near Lyndon, to Frank and Nellie (Allen) Eads. She graduated in 1938 from Lyndon High School, then attended Northern Illinois Teachers’ College in DeKalb, obtaining a teaching certificate in 1940. Marian taught elementary school in Monroe Center and Genoa, and for 27 years she taught second grade at Northside Elementary School in Morrison. During that time, she earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University.
She married Frank Hiland of Dekalb on Aug. 27, 1944, in Lyndon. They lived in Sycamore and DeKalb, and in 1946 they moved to the family farm in Lyndon, where they raised their children. Frank preceded her in death on Nov. 20, 2014, after 70 years of marriage.
Marian was a member of Lyndon Congregational Church, Lyndon Historical Society, and Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a 4-H leader for 20 years. Sewing, dancing, cooking, reading, gardening, and traveling were activities that she enjoyed throughout her life. She and Frank belonged to several flying clubs and enjoyed taking trips in their airplane, as well as hosting fly-ins at their farm. They spent 20 winters together at their home in Mission, Texas.
Marian is survived by her children, David (Hilda) Hiland of Chesapeake, Virginia; Sue (Neil) Castelein of Taylor, Texas, and Mary Lou (David) Bend of LaMoille; seven grandchildren, Andrew Castelein, Matthew Castelein, Lindsay Kendall, Peter Castelein, Nicole Lee, Danielle Hiland, and Erin Brenner; and nine great-grandchildren.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Private graveside services will be Friday at Riverside Cemetery in Prophetstown. A celebration of her life will be at a later date. McDonald Funeral Home and Crematory in Prophetstown is handling arrangements.
