Rockford teen drowns at Lake Louise

BYRON – A 16-year-old Rockford boy died Monday night, about 8 hours after being pulled from Lake Louise.

Luis Campos died around 9:10 p.m. at MercyHealth Hospital – Rockton Avenue in Rockford, Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz said Tuesday. The cause of death was drowning.

The teen went under in area of the lake designated “no swimming” around 1 p.m. while trying to retrieve a beach ball that had floated away, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a news release.

Lifeguards, first responders and others searched the area, and the boy was pulled from the water after about 10 minutes.

The incident is being investigated but foul play is not suspected, the release said.

Lake Louise is a campground and recreation area at 8840 N. state Route 2, just north of Byron.
