SAVANNA – A 78-year-old pedestrian – the owner of Kness Trucking in Chadwick – was killed when she was struck by a drunken driver around 8 p.m. Thursday on Adams near Main Street, the Savanna Police Department said in a news release Friday morning.
Judith A. Kness had to be removed from under the car and died at the scene. An autopsy will be done later today, Carroll County Coroner Matt Jones said.
Darrel J. Sweeney, 65, of Savanna, is charged with aggravated DUI resulting in death, punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison, two counts of misdemeanor DUI and unsafe backing.
He is free after posting $3,000 of his $30,000 bond, and has a status hearing Oct. 1. He told the court Friday at his arraignment that he plans to hire an attorney.
Kness and her son, Scott, ran the daily operations at Kness Trucking Inc., a long-haul and livestock transport company at 113 W. Third St. in Chadwick.
She and her husband, the late Gerald A. Kness, bought the company in 1982 from Jerry's father, Carl G. Kness, who founded it in 1932. Jerry Kness died Dec. 20, 2001.
Among others, Judy Kness also is survived by her sons David and Steven Kness.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Law Jones Funeral Home in Savanna.
