Halloween's last gasp

PRINCETON – Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road finishes its frightening run from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St.

Paw Paw Christmas show

PAW PAW – The annual Paw Paw Christmas craft show runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Paw Paw School, 511 Chapman St. There will be more than 35 crafters, a Christmas tree raffle, cupcake wars, concessions and more.

Dixon Coin Club show and sale

DIXON – The annual Dixon Coin Club coins and collectibles show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Dixon Elks Lodge, 1279 Franklin Grove Road.

There also will be drawings for prizes, and a 50-50 raffle.

Chess tournament at SHS

STERLING – Whether you’re a pro with the pawn or a rookie with the rook, you can test your skills at the chess tournament beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Sterling High School’s Musgrove Fieldhouse, 1608 Fourth Ave. Participation is free; those not on a team must bring their own chess board.

First-round play begins at 9:30 a.m for elementary, middle, high school and adult divisions. Elementary division awards will be presented at 12:30 p.m.; middle school and adult awards at 5 and high school awards at 5:30 p.m.

Concessions will be available.

Illinois' bizarre history

OREGON – For more than two decades, Chad Lewis has traveled the back roads of the world, searching for the strange and unusual.

On Friday, he'll tell you about the oddities of Illinois at 2 p.m. at the Oregon Public Library, 300 Jefferson St. Admission is free.

Lewis is the author of more than 20 books on the weird and wonderful, and has appeared on several TV and radio shows, including the Discovery Channel's "A Haunting" and ABC's "Scariest Places on Earth."
