Taking a stand for Veterans Day

Veterans Day, Nov. 11, will be here soon.

I don’t recall exactly when it was given that name, but when I was in grade school many years ago it was called Armistice Day – to commemorate the end of World War I and when the armistice was signed.

At 11 a.m. each Nov. 11, we students were obligated to stand beside our desks and face East for 1 minute of silence to show respect for those who participated in that war; some of them having been killed or wounded.

Sadly, today that is no longer done.

Now, Nov. 11, Veterans Day, is a national holiday and most people probably don’t even know what brought it about.
