The joy of junque

PRINCETON – The annual Huge Winter Garage Sale runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St.

Shoppers will find items from an estate sale, including collectibles, plus books, clothing, Lego toys, Hot Wheels, jewelry, and all kinds “junque”.

Admission is a nonperishable food item or two for the local food pantry.

Christmas in
Carroll County

Grab your friends and take a Country Christmas shop hop through Lanark, Mount Carroll and Lake Carroll.

Shoppers can visit shops filled with the works of area artists and artisans, including a craft mall, antiques, a gourmet coffee shop, a winery, a bookstore, a Christmas tree farm, gift and home décor shops, and restaurants from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Saturday; hours will vary by location on Sunday.

Hospice Festival
of Trees

STERLING – Rock River Hospice and Home’s Festival of Trees Country Store opens at 10 a.m. Saturday at Northland Mall, 2900 E. Lincolnway.

It’s the beginning of more than a week of activities that make up the agency’s biggest annual fundraiser.

Starting Tuesday, decorated trees and holiday items, table settings, and entertainment will join the store, which will be selling gifts and baked goods until Nov. 18. There’s also a silent auction that ends Nov. 17 at Behrz-Bloomz, 2503 N. Locust St, and a fundraiser at Buffalo Wild Wings, 4304 E. Lincolnway, all day Nov. 19.

Rock out in Freeport

FREEPORT – The Northwest Illinois Rock Club’s annual Holiday Gem, Jewelry, Fossil and Mineral show and sale runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Highland Community College Student Center, 2998 W. Pearl City Road.

There will be vendors, demonstrations and a fun-filled children’s area. Speakers’ topics will include “The Geology of Marsand Meteorites,” “Dino Tracks and the Jurassic Park Road Show,” and the latest happenings at the Burpee Museum in Rockford.

POWs in the
Sauk Valley

STERLING – Carol Chandler, a retired hospital nurse and a member of the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society board of directors. will present “German POW’s in Northern Illinois” at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Lincoln Learning Center, 611 E. Third St.

During WW II, thousands of German POWs were sent to the U.S to work. Locally, they worked at canneries in Sterling and Lanark, harvested hemp in Polo to make twine and ropes for ship rigging, and may have worked at the Swiss Milk factory in Dixon.
