Local Special Olympic athletes to compete in Galena

GALENA – About 450 athletes, including five from the Sauk Valley, will compete in the 2019 Special Olympics State Winter Games Tuesday through Thursday at Chestnut Mountain, 8700 W. Chestnut Mountain Road.

Tracy Barna will compete in snowshoeing for Kreider Services of Dixon, and Jacob Hoak-Tracey will represent Kreider in alpine skiing. Colton Buzzard, Benjamin Huych and Christian Lopez, all of Lee County, also will compete in snowshoeing.

A parade of athletes will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday downtown, and will end at the opening ceremony. Fireworks will cap off the event.

Alpine skiing competition runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.

Snowshoeing events will be held from noon to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Thursday.
