Amboy’s Zimmerly named NUIC MVP

Amboy senior Hunter Zimmerly has been honored with the Jamie Koehn Award, given to the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference’s Most Valuable Player.

Zimmerly was one of four unanimous selections to the NUIC East first team.


Green named NUIC West MVP

Eastland junior catcher Jenna Green was named the Most Valuable Player of the Northwest Upstate Illini Conference’s West Division.

Fellow Eastland juniors Meredith Janssen and Emma Norton and West Carroll seniors McKenna
Sullivan and Daniella Tafoya joined Green as
first-team all-conference selections.

Eastland’s Erin Henze and Gabby Snyder and West Carroll’s Madison Magill and Maddie Meek were second-team honorees.


South squads fall in All-Star Game

Local seniors competed for the South teams at the 2019 Jim Shaw All-Star Game on Monday night at Eastland High School in Lanark.

West Carroll’s Ryan
Gengenbach scored 10 points for the South Boys team, which lost 100-85. Fulton’s Kyle Schipper added eight points, Eastland’s Reid Janssen and Fulton’s Jamison Osborn chipped in five points apiece, Morrison’s Ethan Medenblik hit a 3-pointer, and Eastland’s Kaden Henze had two points.

West Carroll’s Maddie Meek scored a team-high nine points for the South Girls team, which lost 45-34. Morrison’s Claire Coons and Peyton Tegeler had seven and six points, respectively. Fulton’s Rylee Leitzen and Eastland’s Sage Walrath added two points apiece.


Dixon’s Duncan to throw at SVCC

Dixon senior Aaron
Duncan will continue his academic and athletic career at Sauk Valley Community College next spring.

Duncan finished eighth in the shot put with a heave of 52 feet, 2.75 inches at the Class 2A State Track & Field Meet last month. Sauk Valley will start its inaugural season next spring.


Optimist tournament moved to Thursday

Inclement weather on Tuesday postponed the Sterling Optimist Club’s Dick Strong Memorial Youth Golf Championship at Emerald Hill in Sterling.

It will now be played on Thursday, with tee times beginning at 11 a.m. Age divisions for boys and girls are 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18.

McCutchen tears ACL, out for the season

Andrew McCutchen tore his ACL in a rundown and will miss the rest of the season.

McCutchen hurt his left knee during Monday night’s game against San Diego. An MRI revealed the injury.

“It’s not the news I wanted to hear,” McCutchen said Tuesday.
