STERLING – Walmart has wrapped up renovations and is having a grand re-opening at 8 a.m. today with family activities, giveaways and samples, the store said in a news release.
The two main new features at the store at 4115 E. Lincolnway are a pick-up tower and a grocery pickup service, both geared toward online shopping.
The 16-foot tower acts as a large vending machine where customers order online, then scan a barcode that’s sent to their smartphone at the tower to retrieve the order.
It’s one of 22 towers being added in Walmarts across the state, including one at the Dixon Walmart, which had a grand re-opening in April.
Other updates include a remodeled apparel department and fitting rooms, modernized grocery layout with added items and wider aisles, a new family restroom and a combination automotive, hardware and sporting goods service desk.
Walmart is undergoing about $87.5 million in renovations statewide.
