OREGON – A Davis Junction man pleaded not guilty to embezzling several thousand dollars from the Oregon VFW Post while he was its commander.
Rusty Barnes, 48, is charged in Ogle County Court with seven counts of felony theft for incidents that occurred from June 20, 2016 to Jan. 18, 2018: two counts of theft of between $10,000 and $100,000, each of which is punishable by 3 to 7 years in prison, and five counts of theft of between $500 and $10,000, each of which carries 2 to 5 years.
The investigation indicates that Barnes took between $10,000 and $100,000 from the post during his time as its commander, from June 2016 until he resigned the following January, State’s Attorney Eric Morrow said.
Barnes was arrested on June 27 and is free on a $10,000 recognizance bond. He has a pretrial hearing Sept. 23.
