Comets cruise to win in Kewanee

Storm, Missiles, Marcos all win league matches; local tennis teams all win

The Newman volleyball team improved to 8-2 on the season with a 25-16, 25-17 victory over Kewanee in a Three Rivers road match.

Aidan Brown had 10 kills, three digs and three aces for the Comets (2-0 TRAC East), and her twin sister Macaire added 10 assists and two kills. Ally Clevenger had four kills and a block, and Shae McNeill dished nine assists.

Bureau Valley def. St. Bede 23-25, 25-21, 25-17: The Storm rallied from a set down at the Storm Cellar to beat the Bruins.

Lauren Wirth had 27 assists, five kills, 14 digs and two aces. Caroline Konneck had six kills, 11 digs and two aces. Kamryn Kolb had eight kills, two blocks and an assist. Sam Bohm and Molly Bohm each had eight kills. Makanna Sabin had 17 digs. Jenna Nordstrom had 12 digs.

Milledgeville def. AFC 25-19, 21-25, 25-18: The Missiles took a match in three sets from the Raiders in Milledgeville.

Alyvia Woodard had 15 kills for the Missiles. Alyssa Mertz and Madison Tarbill each had three aces.

Polo def. Amboy 25-10, 25-19: The Marcos beat the Clippers at home to improve to 4-1 on the season.

Polo’s Alex Dusing had two kills, three blocks, five assists and three digs. Becca Wagner had two aces, three kills and seven digs. Addy Grove had two kills, a block and two digs. Marah Blake had an ace, two blocks, two kills and three digs. Nicole Boelens had two aces, four kills and four digs. Mallory Patterson had six assists, a dig and an ace.

For the Clippers, Gabby Jones had 14 assists and a block. Mallory Powers, Eden Lindenmeyer and Brianna Blaine each had six digs. Madelyn McLaughlin had two aces. Powers had six kills.

Faith Christian def. Hinckley-Big Rock 25-21, 25-19: The Falcons won a pair of close sets on the road.

Naomi Barrett had seven kills, seven digs and four aces. Meghan Van Buren had eight kills, 10 assists and four aces. Krissy Royer had 12 assists. Claire Miller and Julia Heller each had seven kills.

Girls golf

Winnebago 188, Rock Falls 207, Rockford Christian 208: Ellie Wasson fired a 47 for Rock Falls in a triangular at Ingersoll Golf Course in Rockford.

The medalist was Rockford Christian's Emily Kneller with a 9-over-par 44.

West Carroll 225, Galena 233: Hannah Guilinger was the medalist with a 55 as the Thunder edged the Pirates at Sandburr Run in Thomson.

Erie-Prophetstown 237, Orion 277: Samantha Soleta was the medalist with a 54 as the Panthers defeated the Chargers at Oakwood Country Club in Coal Valley.

Girls swimming

Moline 119, Sterling 62: Lauren Moeller won two events and a relay to lead the Golden Warriors against the Maroons at the Duis Center.

Moeller was clocked at 26.1 seconds in the 50 freestyle, and 1:03.07 in the 100 backstroke. She combined with Katie Garland, Rebecca Riley and Megan Christensen to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:51.22.

Girls tennis

Sterling 6, DeKalb 1: Abby Aitken, Kenzie Hubbard and Kaylee Martinez did not drop a game in singles as the Golden Warriors went on the road and beat the Barbs.

Saryn Seeley and Sarah Kirchhoff, Anna Meltzer and Moira Roddy, and Sam Feather and Jenica Francis won in doubles for Sterling (6-0).

Newman 5, Mendota 0: The Comets had little trouble in handling the Trojans at Sauk Valley Community College.

Avery Meyer and Sarah Tunink won in singles. Sydney Schott and Madalyn Ryan, Brynlee Hermeyer and Marisel Schalk, and Maddy Verdick and Maggie Oswalt won in doubles.

Dixon 3, Rockford Lutheran 2: The Duchesses edged the Crusaders in a match played in Machesney Park.

Riley Bally and Emily Tribley won in singles, while Leah Kuehl and Miriya Jones won in doubles for Dixon.

College volleyball

Carl Sandburg def. Sauk Valley 13-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18: The Skyhawks took the first set at home, but then dropped the next three.

Aleah Wight had 25 digs for Sauk. Juliana Rotella had 12 kills, and Lexi Greve had nine kills. Madison Craft had 19 assists, and Emily Shrimplin had 18 assists.
