DIXON – John R. Carlson Sr., age 87, of Dixon, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2019, at Heritage Square in Dixon.

He was born April 30, 1932, in Dixon, the son of John William and Hazel (Kerchner) Carlson Ruehl. John was a member of the Dixon Fire Dept. for 20 years, 17 as a firefighter and 3 as chief. He had also built houses with Otis Pratt and after retirement from the Fire Dept. worked with Phil Bondi building houses and doing additions and remodels.

He married Theresa Blackburn April 2, 1955. She preceded him in death Jan. 25, 1997. He married Reatha Dale Magnafici March 6, 1998. She preceded him in death July 19, 2018.  He was also preceded in death by his parents and his daughter Lori Mann.

He was a veteran of the Navy and was active in the creation of Veterans Memorial Park in Dixon. He was also a member of Dixon American Legion Post 12 and the Dixon Elks Lodge.

John is survived by two sons, John R. “JR” (Vicki) Carlson and Jerry (Peggy) Carlson both of Dixon; stepdaughter, Kathleen (Mark Pinto) Magnafici of Israel; grandsons, Matt (Susan) Carlson, Ryan (Danielle) Carlson and Doug (Kristy) Carlson; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be on Monday, Sept. 23, 2019, at 11 a.m. at the Jones Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Dixon. Visitation will be Monday, from 9 to 11 a.m. in the funeral home.

A memorial has been established to Veterans Memorial Park.
