Expertise in exports: Reps from global giant Alibaba to meet with regional businesses

MORRISON – Representatives from leading global business-to-business e-commerce platform Alibaba.com will be in Whiteside County to meet with area businesses looking to start or increase exports.

Alibaba.com is part of China-based Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., the world’s largest retailer.

Businesses will be able to learning more about the Alibaba.com Gold Supplier Program, an e-commerce platform that offers small and mid-sized businesses the ability to sell to markets served by the online platform, including the U.S., Canada, Europe, India and Brazil and Asia.

Whiteside County Economic Development and its local partners will host a Build Up event for Alibaba and the region’s businesses from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 3 at Morrison Institute of Technology, 701 Portland Ave.

Alibaba is touring the nation to promote its launch of the platform in the U.S. through the Build Up sessions. Included will be workshops, a roundtable discussion, opportunities for individualized training and consultations, and a chance to receive discounts and incentives through the economic development office.

Whiteside County became aware of the Alibaba platform through the Illinois Chamber of Commerce, and jumped at the chance to host a meeting with local businesses, said Gary Camarano, Whiteside County economic development director.

“Up to now, the rollout has been in major metro areas, and having Alibaba.com meet with our business community and explore the opportunity to sell product on the largest global trade platform is an opportunity we did not want to miss,” Camarano said.

The event gives local businesses a comprehensive option for expanding international sales. With 95% of the world’s population living outside of the U.S., the platform reaches more than 190 countries and regions, more than 10 million business buyers, and it fields about 300,000 daily inquiries from prospective customers.

“Alibaba designs and builds the pages for companies,” Camarano said. “It’s an inexpensive way for manufacturers, agribusinesses and wholesalers to find customers and supply chain sources.”
