STERLING – A GoFundMe campaign is underway for the infant son of the 24-year-old mother shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself.
Brittney L. Long died Sunday of a single gunshot to the head, and Duane J. Briggs, 24, of Freeport, then killed himself with a shot to the head.
Their son, Levi McBride, who turned 8 months old on Thursday, is being cared for by his grandmother, and a childhood friend started a GoFundMe account to raise $4,000 to help pay for clothes and other essentials.
“Brit was a very loving mother and a very caring person; no one could ever say a bad thing about her because she had the biggest heart in the world,” said Jordan Brake, who set up the fundraiser. “Brit loved everyone especially her baby boy. She would want to make sure he has the best life possible.”
The bodies of Long, who was from Franklin Grove and attended AFC and Polo high school, and of Briggs, who is from Cedarville and has lived in Oregon and Mount Morris, were found around 6:40 p.m. Sunday by police who were called to the Sterling rental home to conduct a welfare check. Long’s family members requested the check when she failed to attend a family event or answer their calls.
