A herd of horsepower galloped into the Ogle County Fair on Thursday night, courtesy of the Illini State Pullers, which brought its fleet of powerful pulling machines to the fair. Drivers push their pullers to the limit to see how far they can move a sled loaded down with weights. The group has about 100 members and nearly 80 vehicles that compete in 11 classes. Illini State Pullers President Scott Vivian said pulling, which began as a competitive sport in 1960s, has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, driven by farmers who appreciate its history, younger crowds who like to see modified machines flex their muscle, and people who just appreciate the showmanship of the event. Depening on where the group goes, the emphasis can shift from trucks, in the more urban areas, to tractors, in the more rural areas. Go to illinistatepullers.com to learn more about the group.
