Fall is a great time to clean up your yard in preparation for the winter months. If you have downed trees, large branches and tree stumps to remove, you can save money by doing the job yourself, by buying or renting equipment that practically does the task for you.
If you have a fireplace, an electric log splitter can get you free firewood without the backbreaking ordeal of splitting wood with an axe. A log splitter can be gas or electric, and operates by pushing a log into a blade, or conversely, brings the blade to the log. You simply place the log on the machine. Horizontal log splitters are popular for home use. For bigger logs you’ll need a vertical splitter, which costs more. Check the horsepower before buying to make sure it can handle your job.
If the summer or a storm has left your yard full of smaller branches, grind them into free mulch with a chipper. An electric chipper cuts down wood into wood chips or sawdust, leaving your yard pristine again in no time.
Ace Hardware offers tips for what to look for in a chipper. For light duty and regular yard maintenance an electric chipper works great. As with the log splitter, check the horsepower. If you’re using it for work, you may need more. Always check out the capacity before you buy, looking at how large in diameter a branch will fit.
If you have felled trees and need to remove the stumps, you can rent a stump grinder. A stump grinder has a cutting wheel fitted with steel teeth that dig into the stump until it’s ground up. Because stump grinders are heavy duty, you’ll need a trailer hitch if you don’t have it delivered.
Always wear eye protection and ear protection when using heavy-duty equipment.
