Upcoming blood drives throughout the Sauk Valley

The American Red Cross is looking for healthy people to donate blood or platelets, and for a limited time is checking donors’ blood for COVID-19 antibodies, free of charge. Antibody testing will indicate if the donor’s immune system has produced antibodies to this coronavirus, regardless of whether they developed symptoms.

A positive test result indicates that the donor may have been exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 and that their body has developed specific antibodies to the virus. It does not confirm if the donor is infected, or immune to the virus.

A negative result most likely means the individual has not been exposed to COVID-19 and so has not developed antibodies.

Test results will be available within 7 to 10 days in the Red Cross Blood Donor App or donor portal at RedCrossBlood.org.

Donors should schedule an appointment and must wear a face covering or mask while donating. Social distancing will be employed.

Donors must be at least 17, or 16 with parental permission (forms for which are available on the website), must weigh more than 110 pounds, and must bring a photo ID.

Blood donors are eligible to donate every 56 days.

Those with types O, A negative and B negative blood are especially needed. Unless otherwise stated, go to redcrossblood.org or call 800-733-2767 to make an appointment. The Red Cross also is looking for blood drive hosts; check the website for more information.
