Cornerstone Credit Union distributes $1,500 scholarships
FREEPORT – Three area students are the recipients of Cornerstone Credit Union $1,500 Founders’ scholarships: Naomi Mullen of Eastland High School in Lanark, Kody Velazquez of Rock Falls High School, and Alyvia Woodard of Milledgeville High School.
Mullen will attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater to study chemistry,with a focus on biochemistry, Velazquez will attend Aurora University to study secondary education/history, and Woodard will attend Sauk Valley Community College to study accounting and business.
Oregon Women's Club scholarship recipients
OREGON – Megan Buttons and Elizabeth Villarreal, 2020 graduates of Oregon High School, have been awarded $1,000 scholarships by the Oregon Woman's Club.
Buttons will attend Kishwaukee Community College in Malta to study agriculture and become a teacher, and Villarreal will attend the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her goal is to become a neurosurgeon.
Polo High grad wins Highland College machinist scholarship
FREEPORT – Baylee Wiemken of Polo High School was awarded a Gene Haas Foundation Scholarship.
The Foundation awards $1,000 and $500 scholarships to computer numeric-controlled students at Highland Community College. To qualify, the student must be enrolled in Machine Processes I, CNC Mill, CNC Lathe or Advanced CNC Machining.
CNC technology guides the cutting tool on machines such as CNC lathes, CNC mills, CNC grinders, water jets and laser-cutters. In general, machinists produce precision parts from a wide variety of materials utilizing these machine tools.
More scholarship dollars remain for the 2020-21 school year.

Polo grads awarded Burkardt Family Foundation scholarships
POLO – The William and Beverly Burkardt Family Foundation awarded scholarships to Polo Community High School graduating seniors who plan to attend 2- or 4-year colleges or universities.
This year's $1,000 winner is Sadie Baumann. Those awarded $500 scholarships are Kayla Blum, Kennedy Yingling, Garrett Bittinger, Jakob Kindle, Scott Prerost, Tucker Mumford and Caleb Scott.
